Overall Purpose of the Position


The Executive Director (ED) has delegated power from the Greenpeace Belgium (GPBe) Board of Directors to manage and administer the day-to-day operations of Greenpeace Belgium and in representing the interests of the organisation to third parties and external partners. The ED will work with the GPBe Board of Directors and provide high level information and strategic recommendations to ensure good governance and in keeping a strong, vibrant, sustainable, and resilient Greenpeace Belgium.

The ED provides visionary and strategic leadership and overall direction to the organisation ensuring alignment with Greenpeace’s vision, mission and core values. The ED ensures that the organisation’s 3-Years Strategic Plan (3YSP) and the lines of actions agreed to achieve our mission successfully are inclusive and intersectional where strong awareness and comfort with topics such as anti-racism, environmental and climate justice, disability rights, gender justice, and class discrimination are reflected.

The ED heads and leads the GPBe staff, and has ultimate decision-making and responsibility in strengthening human resources policies, and in nurturing duty of care and staff wellbeing. The ED will work closely with the management team and with leadership circles to fulfil their responsibility in the overall success and performance of the organisation.

As part of a global environmental justice network, through relevant Greenpeace International spaces, the ED will collaborate with key senior staff to facilitate and guide the development of global programmes and campaigns, and will contribute to Greenpeace International’s actions in order to succeed and achieve positive impact.

Overall, the ED will drive international collaboration, and maintain accountability across its political positioning, governance, human resources and people care, and financial management, sustainability, and resilience.

Job Description

Strategic development

● In partnership with the Board, with Greenpeace International (GPI) and with the management team, develop a long term strategy for the organisation, in line with its vision, mission, and core values.

● Guides and safeguards the implementation of the agreed GBPe 3YSP and the objectives, including the development of annual plans and annual budget.

● Ensure that there is a common understanding among staff, volunteers and other key stakeholders of the organisation’s vision, mission, and core values, and of the organisation’s 3YSP.

● Monitor and analyse the external environment. In collaboration with the Board, the management team and leadership circles, identify potential new strategies accordingly and adapt, as necessary, the lines of action in response to the changing external environment.

● Ensure that the activities developed align with GPI’s monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) framework and that the scope and lines of actions are reflective of the justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) standards.

Leadership

● Lead the management team and the staff in general, to fulfil their respective roles and responsibilities in the overall success and performance of the organisation.

● Execute the agreed organisational restructure for maximum impact in realising the agreed objectives of GPBe in particular, and with GPI in general.

● Foster a motivating organisational culture that is inspiring, nurturing and inclusive where people constantly seek to learn and improve, and values collective intelligence and strength.

● Maintain high standards of communication across the organisation, ensuring transparent, timely, and regular flow of information between the Board, the staff and teams, and the volunteers.

● Harness and enable spaces and processes to harvest inputs from the Board, the staff and teams, volunteers, and external stakeholders regarding the organisation's performance and potential areas for improvement.

Management

● Coordinate, supervise and receive reports on all aspects of the internal functioning of the organisation across all strategic and operational areas, ensuring that the management structure, internal systems and policies are appropriate to meet the organisation’s vision, mission, and core values.

● Safeguard GPBe’s compliance to Belgian national laws and regulations, as well as to GPI standards and policies, and where relevant regional and international policies.

● Responsible for the reputation and credibility of GPBe and where needed conduct legal assessments and risk mitigation, when judged appropriate, veto actions within the Belgian territory.

● Responsible towards enabling staff to carry out their work effectively and efficiently, and in managing human resources policies and staff well being.

● Manage the change processes that the organisation may require at all time.

● Take ultimate responsibility for the recruitment, induction, training and development of all staff, have in place proper disciplinary and grievance procedures.

● Ensure that directly managed staff are clear about their roles and responsibilities, held directly accountable for their work, achieve the highest possible standards and are appraised regularly.


Financial oversight

● Be accountable for financial management of the finance team, including budgeting, forecasting, and resource allocation.

● Oversee the financial health of the organization and ensure that adequate financial and auditing mechanisms are in place to safeguard GPBe assets.

● Ensures accurate and timely reporting to the Board, the General Assembly, and to supporters and funders where appropriate.


Governance and Relationship to the Board

● Supports the Board to make sound decisions with regular and timely reports including recommendations, advice, and timely qualitative information. Where appropriate, the Board is advised of when decisions are needed both for fiduciary and strategic decisions.

● Ensure that the organisation complies with all its legal and regulatory responsibilities, and safeguards the organisation’s reputation and credibility.

● Maintains and updates the organisational risk register on a regular basis, and ensures that risks are identified, understood and monitored.

● Review and guarantee the functioning of the policies and procedures and maintain the organisation's capacity for effective action.

● Identify relevant methods for monitoring the performance of the organisation and report to the board on performance and progress against approved business, financial and operational plans.


Relations with the Global Greenpeace

● Ensure that Greenpeace Belgium plays a key role in developing Greenpeace International’s programme and makes the best possible contribution to the organisation’s international objectives.

● Represent GPBe in Executive Directors meetings (EDM).

● Participate in international meetings and discussions with colleagues from other Greenpeace offices as appropriate.

● Assist Greenpeace International and other Greenpeace offices by taking on roles and responsibilities outside of Belgium, where needed and appropriate.

Representation GPBe

● Develop the organisation’s public profile and foster appropriate and productive relations with for instance other non-governmental organisations, media organisations, and government, statutory and private bodies.

● Represent GPBe at high level events and spaces, when necessary and in collaboration with the two spokespersons of GPBe, the organisation towards external actors. Act as a spokesperson at public functions, meetings and to the media.

● Where appropriate and delegated, represent GPBe in legal actions on behalf of the association.

Your Profile


Essential skills

Visionary leadership: You have the ability to lead with purpose, empowering teams and colleagues, inspiring stakeholders, and drive transformational change in the priority areas of GPBe.

Demonstrable expertise in governance support and service: You have experience in providing strategic guidance and vision, analysis, key information, and recommendations to the Board of Directors to enable them to make sound decisions in order to govern effectively.

Political insight: Greenpeace is a non-partisan organisation, and is a very political organisation. It is essential that you understand and have a high level ability to read the political landscape in Belgium (especially) and also internationally. As you have to represent GPBe, experience in international fora and negotiations and in public speaking are important.

Experience in People & Culture: managing staff and addressing human resources and people's needs is a direct remit of the ED. You are expected to have basic knowledge of labour legislation and HR processes. You have a strong people skills set especially in managing key issues from the team and individual staff especially on staff wellbeing. Affinity with restorative or transformative justice would be helpful to ensure good connection and to be available to staff.

Experience with strategic budgeting - financial sustainability and resilience. You have the ability to set a vision and an investment strategy for the future together with the finance team. It is essential that you are able to understand strategic budgeting in order to guard GPBe’s financial sustainability and resilience.

A track record in understanding fundraising & stakeholder engagement: While working with a team of fundraisers, you bring in experience on strategies on how to secure diverse funding sources and in building relationships with key funders and donors.

Strategic mindset: You are a skilled strategist, able to switch between big picture and attention to details in order to identify opportunities for GPBe to continue to lead in environmental justice.

Commitment to inclusion & diversity: You promote a workplace culture that values justice, equity, diversity and inclusion (JEDI) with an open communication way of working, ensuring that all voices are heard and respected. You actively seek and engage with diverse perspectives. You identify and mitigate bias on a personal, institutional and process level. You recognise and address barriers to inclusion on the personal, institutional and process levels.

Deep expertise in environmental justice and peoples rights to their resources: You possess a deep understanding of the global environmental justice issues, in particular on climate change, energy, agriculture, and broader sustainability landscape.

Good communication skills: You communicateopenly and transparently with staff, management and board in a timely manner.
